The UN vs. Israel

In the last few decades the United Nations has been obsessed with one country. Is it North Korea, Zimbabwe, Iran, Syria, China or some other nation with a reprehensible human rights record? Those would all be fair guesses and they would all be wrong. Anne Bayefsky, director of the Touro Human Rights Institute, answers this riddle and explains the upside down moral universe in which the United Nations resides.

American Lone Soldiers in the IDF

Produced by Write On For Israel/San Francisco teen participants

“Our documentary is about Lone Soldiers in the Israeli Defense Forces. A lone soldier is a person from outside of Israel who volunteers to serve in the army and has no family with them in Israel. We chose this topic
because the lone soldier program is something unique to the IDF. While filming this documentary we had the privilege of speaking with many different people who were lone soldiers or are connected to lone
soldiers, and although they each had unique, interesting stories, every single one said the same thing; it was the best experience of their lives and they would gladly do it again. We wanted to explore what makes
the experience so amazing, and what motivates people to leave their homes and move half way around the world to serve in an army.”

Agadir – Israel Andalusian Orchestra with Mark Eliyahu

Over the past 15 years the musicians and soloists of the orchestra have been performing in concert halls both in Israel and abroad.
Their work has brought to life the music and heritage of a culture that had almost disappeared forever.

The Andalusian music and culture have evolved into a unique aspect of Israeli culture, enticing various audiences from all over Israel and around the world.

Most of the musicians play from sheet music on classical western instruments- Violin, Viola, Cello, Contrabass and Oboe. These are accompanied by a traditional ensemble of classic eastern instruments- oud, Kamanja (knee violin), Kanoun, Ney, Darbuka and tar all of whom play without sheet music, through the knowledge that has been passed on to them from hundreds of generations.

Beyond Falafel – Food Culture in Israel

Produced by Write On For Israel Teen Participants

“We chose food as the topic for our group for two main reasons. One, it is not a highly controversial topic and two it would be a fun, clever, and accurate way to represent the pluralistic side of Israel that is so
commonly omitted from the conversation. Some highlights of our filming process consisted of tasting different types of food, seeing traditional kosher dishes to seeing Chinese Kosher dishes, and hearing what Israelis had to say about the wide array of food within their country. We hope you enjoy our documentary, and next time you are in Israel, while falafel is still very tasty, see what other scrumptious dishes you
can find.”
